18 months ago I had an occasion to lay out my own personal views on a series of short topics … in about 150 words or less! Over the summer I’ve been rethiniking a few things, so I thought I would reformulate these and put them here for comment or critique.
150 words on leadership
Leadership is both a gift from God to hold lightly and a practice to be learned and developed. Jesus is clear that leadership must be defined by servanthood. It is a matter of the heart: knowing God’s, learning yours. Remembering this keeps me more attentive to growing relationships than getting tasks done. I prefer to entrust responsibility to people in line with their gifts/strengths and not micro-manage. I’m a firm believer in evaluation and assessment, and find that strong commitment to the mission coupled with personal humility and generosity helps defuse most conflicts. I would rather lead and work with a team in community than give into being the lonely person out front. Leaders should constantly be learning, so I try to read widely and gather input from differing, wise voices (both inside and outside the church) before making the hard calls.
Now it’s your turn. Your thoughts? What would you include?
