18 months ago I had an occasion to lay out my own personal views on a series of short topics … in about 200 words or less! Over the summer I’ve been rethinking a few things, so I thought I would reformulate these and put them here for comment or critique. (other posts in this series: on leadership)
<200 words on preaching and worship
Preaching is an art that creates space for conversation between God’s word and the people in God’s world, connecting the gospel to lives in order to inspire and change! Because of my long work with teenagers, I’ve learned to do my best to engage people where they are, shake them into seeing the bigger story of Christ and his kingdom, and offer helpful, practical content that can spark the next step for the most people. Worship ought to be our activity in response to WHO God is and what God has done, sharing by the Spirit in the worship led by Christ before the Father. When I plan and lead worship, I hope it freely brings the deep things of God and the rich resources of tradition into current time and place in a relevant and inspiring manner. It helps when music within worship is expressed in forms that are relevant to the life of the larger community (and not just the “churchedâ€). Our “forms†of worship shouldn’t set barriers before people wanting to meet with God: it’s God who meets with us!
Now it’s your turn. Your thoughts? What would you include?
